VFX (Visual Effects) and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery)

VFX (Visual Effects) and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery)

Both VFX (Visual Effects) and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) play a huge role in modern movies, TV shows, commercials, and games. While they are closely related, they have distinct differences.

What is VFX (Visual Effects)?

VFX (Visual Effects) is the process of integrating live-action footage with digitally created elements to create scenes that are difficult, dangerous, or impossible to film in real life.

Types of VFX

  1. CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) – Digital models, creatures, environments, etc.

  2. Compositing (Chroma Keying / Green Screen) – Combining different layers of video/images to create a single scene.

  3. Motion Capture (MoCap) – Capturing real human/animal movements and applying them to CGI characters.

  4. Matte Painting & Digital Set Extensions – Adding digital backgrounds or expanding real sets.

  5. Particle Simulations – Creating fire, smoke, explosions, rain, snow, and other dynamic effects.

  6. Rotoscoping – Manually cutting out objects from footage to manipulate or replace them.

 Examples of VFX in Movies

  • "Avengers: Endgame" – Thanos is a CGI character, and battle scenes use heavy VFX.

  • "Jurassic Park" – The dinosaurs are CGI, blended with real actors.

  • "Harry Potter" – Magic effects like spells, Quidditch, and creatures are created using VFX.

VFX Tools: Houdini, Nuke, After Effects, Maya, Blender, 3ds Max.

What is CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery)?

CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) is the creation of 3D models, animations, and visual effects using a computer. It is a part of VFX, but it is also used independently in animation and video games.

Types of CGI

  1. 3D Modeling – Creating digital 3D objects, characters, or environments.

  2. Texturing & Shading – Adding realistic materials and colors to 3D models.

  3. Lighting & Rendering – Simulating real-world lighting to make CGI look natural.

  4. Animation & Rigging – Making CGI characters move realistically.

  5. Simulation Effects – Water, fire, smoke, and destruction effects using physics-based CGI.

Examples of CGI in Movies & Games

  • "Avatar" (2009, 2022) – Entirely CGI-generated world and characters.

  • "Toy Story" (1995-2022) – Full CGI animated movie.

  • "The Lion King" (2019) – The film looks live-action but is 100% CGI.

  • Video Games (GTA, Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed) – Use CGI for game characters and environments.

CGI Tools: Houdini, Maya, Blender, ZBrush, Unreal Engine, Cinema 4D.

VFX vs. CGI: The Difference

In Short:

  • CGI is the digital creation of characters, objects, and environments.

  • VFX is the process of integrating CGI and real footage to create seamless scenes.
